Peak district hideaway in a cosy cottage for two
Dog-friendly Ollerenshaw Cottage is the perfect hideaway for two with open-plan living downstairs and one beautiful double bedroom upstairs. The cottage was totally refurbished in December 2022 to include a new kitchen with built-in appliances, Derbyshire granite work surfaces and a waste disposal system. New oak flooring with underfloor heating and new carpeting, leads upstairs to a newly installed vintage-themed bathroom and luxury double bedroom. The cottage is located in one of Derbyshire’s most stunning valleys, nestled under High Wheeldon. Alongside a gorgeous Derbyshire cottage, there’s an honesty shop, luxury toiletries made for us in Bakewell, linens with the highest thread counts and the fluffiest towels, Voltshare EV charging, our own roasted High Wheeldon Rising fresh coffee and super-fast zooming.
Upstairs next door to the bedroom is a contemporary bathroom with over bath shower. A private patio is just outside your front door. Our guests are free to roam throughout our 12 acres of Peak District National Park, making friends with cows and sheep (or enjoying the local pub). If you love walking, you can bag a trig by climbing to the top of High Wheeldon directly from your cottage front door. If you’re working while with us, feel free to use our dedicated work space – a luxurious office under the trees with the most amazing views. It’s free to use and has super-fast wifi and a printer.

Liz and Greg’s long weekend in Ollerenshaw cottage
Our visit to Wheeldon Trees Cottages was just what the doctor ordered – a long weekend of English countryside walks, café culture and pints of real ale in the local pub. Is there a better place than England?
10 Peak District cottages
Wheeldon Trees Cottages is a small retreat of 10 cottages just outside of Buxton. Bakewell is a few miles further on and it’s a great location to explore every part of the Peak District. The cottages are all different sizes. The Farmhouse is the latest one to join the fold. We were staying in the smallest cottage, Ollerenshaw with our dog Scooby. There are three dogfriendly cottages at Wheeldon Trees, with our cottage being one of them.
Amazing Derbyshire views
We were met at Wheeldon Trees Cottages by the owner Steve. The first thing you’ll notice as you drive in is the view. I’m sorry, the cottages are all gorgeous but that view! It’s breath-taking. It stretches miles across High Wheeldon (more of that later) into field upon field of beautiful Peak District countryside. If you’re looking for an Instagram shot of the day, this is it.
Luxury welcome bag
Steve met us in the carpark with our luxury welcome bag – a beautiful jute bag packed full of surprises. Inside was milk, eggs and butter from the local farm, sweet treats from Birds the Baker, a box of Yorkshire teabags, a bag of Wheeldon High Rising coffee (roasted locally for Wheeldon Trees) and a bottle of red wine. We could have had white wine or something soft, but opted for red. When you park up you’ll notice the Voltshare EV charging – essential if you’re going electric. While we were there several cottages were charging their cars.
Not just a holiday cottage
Wheeldon Trees Cottages is a step up from your normal holiday cottage. You’re not abandoned in the middle of nowhere trying to fathom out how the heating works, but you’re also not crowded by the owners either. Steve and Hazel live off site, with Steve there most days and Hazel popping in at the weekends. Alongside the cottages and EV charging, there’s a general store which has lots of things to borrow such as children’s equipment (thankfully ours were left at home with Granny) and kitchen extras including slow cookers, popcorn makers and coffee grinders. There are four electric bikes to borrow absolutely free of charge and an honesty shop. The honesty shop has obviously had a lot of thought put into it. You will find baked beans, but more to our liking was the artisan ice cream from Dalton’s Dairy and the truffle pasta sauce. The cottages are ideal to kick back and watch a movie, so on one night we stocked up with luxury chocolate from the honesty shop and borrowed a movie from Steve to watch.
Ollerenshaw Cottage
The cottage was open ready for us when we arrived. Steve is there most day to welcome everyone but if he’s not, the cottage will be left open for your arrival. Ollerenshaw has open plan living downstairs with underfloor heating and one double bedroom and bathroom upstairs. The bathroom was stocked full of The White Company toiletries which was nice to come home to after a long walk up High Wheeldon. While talking of High Wheeldon, you must climb it on your holiday. It’s literally just outside the cottages. It’s not Mount Snowdon but it is spectacular, and our dog Scooby loved it. At the top you can see for miles. Once we climbed it, we celebrated with a glass of wine watching the sunset. The sunsets from Wheeldon Trees Cottages are legendary.
Eat out in the Peak District
There was plenty to do during our long weekend and we will definitely return. During our stay we visited Chatsworth House. Pride and Prejudice was filmed there and it’s truly magnificent. We’ve heard there’s an amazing Christmas market there from November, so we may time our return visit for then. We ate out for two nights. On the first night, we walked to the Packhorse Inn for a traditional pub meal. Pie and chips and a pint of real ale never tasted so good. On the second night, we decided to treat ourselves so booked ahead and enjoyed a taster menu at the George in Alstonefield. It’s more a restaurant than a pub and you can really tell by the food. The menu changes every week. While we were there, we enjoyed white asparagus and scorched scallops, a wild trout tartare fish course followed by saddleback pork. The George is recognised by Michelin and The Good Food Guide, so you are in for a treat.
Everything you need
On the final night in Ollerenshaw we cooked in the cottage. There is literally everything you might need, from Joseph and Joseph utensils to beautiful Denby Pottery. All we needed to do before we left the next morning was fill the dishwasher, pack our car, and drive away. A totally stress-free and relaxing few days.
