Wheeldon Trees Cottages - Old Eyre Arms

A Peak District pub is set to be reborn thanks to the culinary expert behind one of Sheffield’s leading restaurants.

The Peak District is a tapestry of rolling hills, charming villages, and, of course, traditional pubs. But what happens when a Michelin-starred pedigree meets a centuries-old inn? Magic, it seems. The Old Eyre Arms in Hassop, nestled between Calver and Bakewell, is about to experience a renaissance under the watchful eye of Alistair Myers, the culinary force behind Sheffield’s acclaimed Rafters restaurant and Rafters at Riverside House, the boutique hotel in nearby Ashford-in-the-Water.

Best Traditional Pub

For locals, the name Rafters conjures images of exquisite fine dining.  But Myers is quick to reassure: this isn’t about bringing white tablecloths to Hassop. “I have the best restaurant in Sheffield, the best boutique hotel in the Peak District – and now I want to create the best traditional pub in Derbyshire,” he declares. The vision? High-quality, comforting food with a twist on English classics, served in a breathtaking setting with great beer and a genuinely warm atmosphere.

The Old Eyre Arms, dormant for over five years, is a local landmark. Its ivy-clad façade, changing with the seasons, hints at the history within. For Myers, who regularly passed the pub en route to Rafters at Riverside House, it was love at first sight. “It has amazing curb appeal,” he explains. “It’s such an old and historic pub, trading for 400 years, decorated with amazing old pictures. Two open fires…it just feels like a proper inn.” Even empty, the pub exuded an irresistible atmosphere.

Authentic Charm

This isn’t just a simple reopening. Myers, twice recognised as one of the UK’s top 100 sommeliers, is passionate about quality in every detail. From the carefully curated seasonal dishes and “exceptional” service, to the furniture and cutlery, no stone will be left unturned. The aim is to elevate the traditional pub experience while preserving its authentic charm. Think classic pub fare, but executed with the finesse and attention to detail that has earned Myers’ other ventures such acclaim.

The pub’s location is another draw. Surrounded by idyllic walking routes, it’s the perfect spot to refuel after a day exploring the Peak District’s stunning landscapes. Imagine crisp country air, a hearty meal, a perfectly poured pint, and the crackling warmth of an open fire – that’s the experience Myers is crafting.

The grand reopening, slated for the end of March, is eagerly anticipated. The outpouring of support online has been “heart-warming,” says Myers, but also brings the weight of expectation. He understands the iconic status of The Old Eyre Arms and is committed to honoring its legacy. “It will very much remain a pub,” he emphasises, “but it will be a pub that serves amazing food in the heart of a stunning corner of the Peak District.”
