The Peak District's very own Eyam Half Marathon has just been crowned the UK's best…

Buxton will join the nation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
On Sunday, May 11th, 2025, the community is invited to gather on The Slopes for a special service. It will honour the sacrifices and service of those who contributed to the Allied victory in World War II. The service will begin at 10:45 am.
Victory in Europe Day
VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, marks the formal acceptance by Nazi Germany of its unconditional surrender to the Allied forces. While the war continued in other parts of the world, particularly in the Pacific, VE Day signified the end of the war in Europe and brought an end to six years of conflict and immense hardship. The original VE Day, on May 8th, 1945, was a day of jubilation and celebration across the United Kingdom. Streets were filled with cheering crowds, families rejoiced and communities came together to mark this momentous occasion. It was a time to remember those who had fallen, to celebrate the return of loved ones and to look forward to a future of peace.
Eighty years on, the significance of VE Day remains undiminished. It’s a time to remember the courage, resilience and unity that defined the wartime generation. And it’s a time to reaffirm our commitment to peace and understanding.
The Slopes
The service on The Slopes promises to be a moving tribute. It will offer an opportunity for the community to come together and pay their respects. It will be a chance to honour the veterans, the families who endured so much and all those who played a part in securing victory. All are welcome to attend. Whether you have a personal connection to the war or simply wish to show your gratitude.
This 80th anniversary is a particularly important milestone, as it represents a final opportunity for many to directly remember and honour those who lived through the war.
Visitors are invited to The Slopes on Sunday, May 11th, 2025, at 10:45 am. The organisers are encouraging attendees to arrive early to allow time for parking and finding a suitable viewing spot.
