Peak District Chippy Crowned Gold
A Peak District chippy has been crowned one of the best in the UK, securing a coveted Gold Seal at the 2024/25 Good Food Awards.
Toll Bar Fish & Chips in Stoney Middleton has consistently impressed customers over three years, earning the prestigious accolade. This historic shop, dating back to 1926, is the country’s only Grade II-listed fish and chip shop.
The Good Food Awards, established in 2002, recognise exceptional independent eateries. Customer reviews solely determine the winners, ensuring the best businesses are celebrated.
Stoney Middleton
Stoney Middleton, a picturesque Peak District village, often slips under the radar of those rushing along the A623. However, those who venture off the main road find a wealth of history, stunning architecture, and breathtaking natural beauty.
The village’s history dates back to Roman times, with evidence suggesting a settlement existed here. Its name, derived from Saxon-Norman origins, literally translates to ‘stony middle farm.’ A mysterious earth platform, Castle Hill, overlooks the village, though its exact purpose remains unclear. The Domesday Book of 1086 even mentions Stoney Middleton. Interestingly, the village’s ‘Roman Baths’ are actually a 19th-century bathhouse built over a hot spring.
Great Plague
The village played a significant role in the Great Plague of 1665-1666. Stoney Middleton’s residents provided essential supplies to the stricken village of Eyam, demonstrating remarkable courage and compassion.
Stoney Middleton boasts several notable buildings. The unusual octagonal nave of St Martin’s Church, dating back to 1759, is one of only two such structures in Britain. Another intriguing building is the octagonal toll house, now a Grade II-listed fish and chip shop. This toll house was built in the 1830s to collect fees for the road blasted through Middleton Dale.
Today, Stoney Middleton offers a range of amenities, including the Moon Inn, a popular pub known for its good food, local ales, and alleged ghostly hauntings. The village’s history is intertwined with the Peak District’s mining heritage. Numerous quarries and mines dot the landscape, a testament to the area’s rich mineral resources. While many of these mines are now abandoned, the dramatic limestone crags continue to attract rock climbers, cavers, and walkers.
Just outside the village, Coombs Dale is a designated Special Area of Conservation. This beautiful limestone valley is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including rare flowers, butterflies, and birds.
