In 2025 we celebrate the 250th birthday of Jane Austen – so what exactly is Derbyshire’s Jane Austen connection?
Jane Austen is a literary genius whose novels continue to captivate readers worldwide. Among her most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice holds a special place in the hearts of many, and Derbyshire, with its stunning landscapes and historic houses, played a significant role in bringing this timeless tale to life.
No Finer County
Austen herself was enchanted by Derbyshire, describing it as “no finer county in England.” In 1811, she visited the region, staying at the Rutland Arms in Bakewell, where she is believed to have revised the final chapters of Pride and Prejudice, drawing inspiration from the local scenery and atmosphere.
Many think the novel’s fictional town of Lambton is based on Bakewell. At the same time, the magnificent Pemberley, the ancestral home of the enigmatic Mr Darcy, takes inspiration from the grandeur of Chatsworth House. This iconic Derbyshire estate served as the backdrop for the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. Visitors can still explore the Painted Hall and Sculpture Gallery, which featured prominently in the film and admire the breathtaking exterior of Chatsworth, evoking the image of Pemberley in Austen’s novel.
Colin Firth
The enduring popularity of Pride and Prejudice has led to numerous adaptations. One of the most famous is the beloved 1995 BBC television series starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. While this series took creative liberties with locations, Derbyshire still played a crucial role. Lyme Park, with its picturesque lake, was chosen to represent Pemberley’s grounds. The iconic scene of Mr Darcy emerging from the water is etched in fans’ minds. Additionally, Sudbury Hall, a stunning 17th-century house, provided Darcy’s opulent home interiors.
Derbyshire’s connection to Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice continues to draw visitors from around the world. By following in the footsteps of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, tourists can experience the beauty and charm of the region that inspired one of literature’s most enduring love stories. As we celebrate Austen’s 250th birthday, let us raise a glass to the enduring legacy of Pride and Prejudice and the captivating landscapes of Derbyshire.
