Bakewell named one of best dog-friendly dining spots in UK
The picturesque town of Bakewell, just a 20-minute drive from Wheeldon Trees Cottages, has been named the second-best town in the UK for dog-friendly dining spots.
Exploring local eateries is all part of the Peak District staycation experience, but according to a survey of 2,500 dog owners, 37% said that they have difficulty finding dog-friendly restaurants and cafes on holiday.
The following pubs are all dog-friendly. Note – it’s always best to check in advance that they are open before making a special trip.
The Wheatsheaf
The Wheatsheaf is a dog-friendly pub in Bakewell that’s won multiple awards over the years for its stellar service and phenomenal atmosphere. The food is exceptional, and as you’d expect, all the cakes and sweet treats are supplied by the local bakery.
The staff love seeing furry visitors and often supply them with a drink before the humans have decided what to order for themselves! There’s usually doggy treats too, including a sausage if your pooch is lucky.
Address: Bridge Street, DE45 1DS. Opening Times: Sun-Thu: 09:00-23:00 / Fri-Sat: 09:00-00:00
The Manners Hotel
The Manners is a cheerful dog-friendly pub and is always happy to accommodate your fur baby. The staff love to fuss a pup and will offer them a few tasty treats.
They’ve even got their own pub dog Ziggy to make friends with. The clean, modern country decor makes a bright and welcoming space that’s as appealing for a light lunch as an evening tipple, and pie night is sure to tempt you through the doors!
Address: Haddon Road, DE45 1EP. Opening Times: Call ahead to check
Castle Inn
Down towards the river, you’ll find the Castle Inn, a Greene King pub. Pups are always welcome inside or in the garden of this dog-friendly pub in Bakewell, and staff happily fuss new furry friends and offer up free treats for them.
On hot days, there are water bowls and ice cubes to quench their thirst, while the humans can cool down with a pint.
Address: Castle Street, DE45 1DU. Opening Times: Every day: 07:00-23:00
Joiners Arms
The Joiners Arms opened in 2019 as Bakewell’s only micropub. Despite its small size, there’s a wide range of craft beers, real ales, premium spirits, and fine wines to sample in the warm and cosy atmosphere.
Well-behaved doggies and kiddos are always welcome inside, and there are free treats for furry family members to tuck into.
Address: 1-2 Rutland Buildings, DE45 1BZ. Opening Times: Mon-Thu: 12:00-23:00 / Fri-Sat: 12:00-00:30 / Sun: 12:00-22:00
The Bulls Head
Less than two miles along the river is The Bulls Head in Ashford in the Water. This quaint coaching inn has been welcoming travellers to rest and refresh themselves since the 17th century.
You and the pooch are welcome to “pup” in to warm up and scoff generous portions of tasty pub grub, including big, beefy burgers.
There’s a water barrel and bowls in the garden for dogs to quench their thirst, otherwise, the staff are happy to fetch a drink for the dog when you order your own.
Address: Church Street, Ashford in the Water, DE45 1QB. Opening Times: Mon-Fri: 12:00-15:00 & 18:00-22:00 / Sat-Sun: 12:00-22:00
The Red Lion
The Red Lion is another traditional inn in the heart of Bakewell. Canines are allowed in the pub, even when they’re a bit damp after walkies in the rain.
There are dedicated tables for patrons with pooches, and it’s best to book ahead because this place is popular.
Address: The Square, DE45 1BT. Opening Times: Every day: 10:00-22:00
The Queen’s Arms
Dogs are welcome in the bar of the Queen’s Arms, the only rule is that you and the pooch stay in the areas with wooden floors. There’s a game room with pool and darts if you fancy some proper pub entertainment.
Otherwise, you can cosy up by the fire with a cracking ale from this casque-mark accredited watering hole. There’s also a limited menu of pub food and plenty of bar snacks to tide you over.
Address: Bridge Street, DE45 1DS. Opening Times: Various – Check their Facebook
The Woodyard
The Woodyard is definitely more restaurant than pub, but surprisingly they welcome dogs inside and out. If you’re only stopping by for a drink, the beer garden is a little more laid back and happens to be the only one in Bakewell to overlook the river.
As expected from this more up-market gastronomic spot, there are cool cocktails and beautiful and terrifically tasty food, although you’ll still find some pub-style classics like pie and burgers. There are even yummy treats for the pooch!
Address: The Woodyard, DE45 1AQ. Opening Times: Sun-Thu: 12:00-21:00 / Fri-Sat: 12:00-22:00
The Flying Childers Inn
If you fancy a walk to stretch your legs, head out past Haddon Hall to The Flying Childers Inn. The pub makes a great pit-stop after exploring the beautiful patch of the Peak District, and they’re used to welcoming walkers and pooches.
This idyllic country pub won the coveted “unspoilt pub of the year” award from the good pub guide in 2019, and they’re in the AA guide so you’re sure to find fur-friendly service, scrummy light lunches, and well-kept pints.
Address: Main Road, Stanton in Peak, DE4 2LW. Opening Times: Mon-Tue: 19:00-23:00 / Wed-Fri: 12:00-14:00 & 19:00-23:00 / Sat-Sun: 12:00-15:00 & 19:00-23:00
Farmyard Inn
The Farmyard Inn is a traditional village pub so named because it was a farm before becoming a pub in 1829. Dogs are allowed inside the pub and the staff will give them a fuss and make them just as welcome in the bar as their humans.
Other kinds of furry friend have even stopped by for a pub lunch too! Street food stalls like the Project D doughnuts “pup” by occasionally, so it’s always worth sniffing the place out to see what’s on offer.
Address: Main Street, DE45 1UW. Opening Times: Various
The Rutland Arms
The Rutland Arms is a handsome hotel and dog-friendly pub in Bakewell that always has bowls of water and free biscuits on hand for Fido.
The humans are well looked after too, since the friendly staff are attentive and one of the reasons this pub made it into the AA Guide, along with their delicious fine dining.
Address: The Square, DE45 1BT. Opening Times: “Always open” – Call ahead to check
The Bulls Head Hotel
Not to be confused with the similarly named Bull’s Head listed above, the Bulls Head Hotel is a family and dog-friendly pub in Bakewell oozing with historic character and countryside charm, plus a pretty phenomenal steak and stilton pie.
It’s run by a local family who lives in the pub as well, so it’s super friendly and homely. Just one word of warning though, there’s no onsite parking.
Address: Fountain Square, Church Street, Youlgreave, DE45 1UR
Opening Times: Mon-Tue: 17:00-23:00 / Wed-Fri: 12:00-15:00 & 17:00-00:00 / Sat: 12:00-00:00 / Sun: 12:00-23:00
