As the crisp mornings and cool breezes arrive, it’s the perfect time to explore the region’s National Trust properties. From spooky Halloween adventures to cosy autumnal walks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s a run-down of what’s on this autumn and October half-term holiday. Join the National Trust for guided walks, wreath-making workshops, and even a chance to create your own magical broomstick!

Longshaw – spooky woods

Get lost in the spookiness of Longshaw this October half-term! Embark on a sensory trail through the eerie woods, using all your senses to discover the hidden secrets lurking within. Join our spooky lantern walk, where youngsters can create their own magical lanterns to light their way on a storytelling adventure. The journey ends with a treat of seasonal snacks and drinks at the Moorland Discovery Centre.

26 October – 2 November ages 5-10 1pm – 3pm and ages 11-14 4pm – 5.30pm.

Ilam Hall and Garden

Unwind in the peaceful surroundings of Ilam Park. Enjoy breathtaking views, explore nature, and indulge in delicious treats at the Manifold Tea-room. A perfect getaway for a relaxing day.

Family Guided Walk

A family-friendly guided walk along the Manifold River to Thorpe will take place on 29 September. Down to the famous Stepping Stones and back for a slice of cake, 10.30am – 1.30pm.

Folk Tales of the White Peak

The White Peak is full of folk tales, which you can hear being told in their original setting. Guided Walk: Folk Tales of the White Peak takes place on 13 October 10.30am – 1.00pm.

Magical Creatures Trail

Step into a world of enchantment this Halloween at Ilam Park. Join the Magical Creatures Trail and discover hidden magic lurking around every corner. Create your own mythical creature and let your imagination run wild. The trail is open from October 26 to November 3, 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM.

Wreath Making Crafternoon

A relaxing ‘crafternoon tea’ at Ilam Park, where you’ll learn to create a beautiful autumn-inspired wreath, using natural materials. Enjoy an afternoon tea afterwards, taking in the wonderful view from the Manifold Tea Room. 27 October 3.00pm – 3.30pm.

Kids Broom Making Workshop

Halloween at Ilam includes a magical Halloween workshop, where you’ll learn broom-making secrets. Create your very own broomstick to fly through the night sky and cast spells. 28 October 10.30am – 11.30am.

Hardwick Hall

There’s lots to look forward to at Hardwick Hall this autumn. Adventure outdoor cinema takes place with The Lost Boys (15) on October 11, Hocus Pocus (PG) October 12, Scream (18) October 13. Apple Day, to celebrate all things apples through tours, storytelling and tasting sessions takes place October 20-21. On November 2 will be dark stories from the tapestries with a family-friendly storytelling tour and also a 16+ version of the event. Looking ahead Hardwick Wintertide returns with late night opening on Fridays and Saturdays.
