Celebrate International Women’s Day by Walking in the Footsteps of a Peak District Pioneer
Ethel Haythornthwaite, the remarkable conservationist who championed the preservation of the Peak District, will be celebrated by the National Trust this International Women’s Day.
Haythornthwaite’s tireless efforts throughout the 20th century, including founding the Sheffield Association for the Protection of Rural Scenery (now CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire) in 1924, played a pivotal role in safeguarding the Peak District’s natural beauty from development. Her legacy is evident in the stunning landscapes we enjoy today, and even in the names of 95 hills in the Peak District, known collectively as “The Ethels.”
To commemorate her invaluable contributions, the National Trust is hosting a series of events:
Guided walks across some of the “Ethels”
Embark on a journey through the Peak District’s most breathtaking scenery, from March 15th to May 10th. Learn about Ethel’s life and work while enjoying panoramic views. Tickets are £7.50 per person.
Special talk on International Women’s Day
Join Cassa Townsend from CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire on March 8th for a captivating talk exploring Ethel’s pioneering spirit. Discover how she saved the Longshaw Estate and championed the protection of the Peak District’s unique wildlife and landscapes. The talk will be followed by a guided walk to the summit of Higger Tor, offering stunning panoramic views. Tickets are £7.50 per person.
