Villages to visit in the Peak District

There are lots of villages to visit in the Peak District. At Wheeldon Trees Cottages we’re very lucky to be surrounded by some of the best. From traditional tea rooms to country pubs and independent shops, there’s plenty to visit.

Here are a few villages to visit when staying at our luxury cottages.

Ashford-in-the-Water

Located in the heart of the White Peak along the River Wye, the village of Ashford-in-the-Water is home to the medieval Sheepwash Bridge. It’s famous for being named the best location in England for playing Poohsticks. It’s also the most photographed bridge in Britain.

The village boasts beautiful limestone cottages with stunning gardens, two friendly inns and a charming 13th-century church. This picture-postcard Peak District destination is particularly impressive during the well-dressing season. In early summer there are six wells dotted around the village that are adorned with a colourful display of lovingly-created local artwork.

Hartington

Just down the road from Wheeldon Trees, you’ll find Hartington with its brilliant cheese shop and lovely farm shop and café.

Hartington is in the centre of the White Peak area of the Peaks, lying on the River Dove which is the Staffordshire border.

The scenery in and around this charming old limestone village is outstanding. The village is centred around a spacious square, with the much-photographed duck pond as a focal point. There are some fine old buildings. This includes the Charles Cotton Hotel, St. Giles Church, the Market Hall and Hartington Hall. In addition, there is a good selection of gift shops, cafes and pubs and there is even a small pottery.

Edale

Edale is a small village nestled beneath Kinder Scout. It’s tucked away at the end of the Hope Valley. It’s famous for its dramatic scenery and hiking. To quench your thirst or refuel yourself after a long day in the hills you’ll find two pubs, two cafes and a village shop.

Castleton

Castleton is in the High Peak at the western end of the Hope Valley. It’s on the Peakshole Water, a tributary of the River Noe. It sits between the Dark Peak to the north and the White Peak to the south.

You can approach it through the dramatic limestone gorge of Winnats Pass or from the Hope Valley. Whichever way, you’ll appreciate the fabulous views created by its location on the cusp of the Peak District’s breathtaking limestone and gritstone landscapes.

If you’re feeling fit, you can firstly climb the steep steps up to the atmospheric Norman ruins of Peveril Castle. It was completed in 1086 for William Peverel, a favoured knight of William the Conqueror.

Next, you can fortify yourself in numerous cafés, tea rooms and pubs. Finally, why not head off to tackle the Great Ridge Walk, one of the finest routes of its kind in the country.
