Where to see Spring flowers in the Peaks

We’re all longing for a bit of Springtime. If you’re searching to see Spring flowers in the Peaks, here are our favourite places.

Chatsworth

Chatsworth can usually be guaranteed one of the district’s finest collections of daffodils. One of the most photographed spots is the Canal Pond at the south of the house.

Hardwick Hall

In the Spring, Lady Spencer’s Wood in the Hardwick Hall estate is carpeted with wild garlic, wood violets and wild daffodils beneath towering ancient beech trees. Lady Spencer was the mother of Georgiana Cavendish (wife of the 5th Duke of Devonshire). She created a woodland walk with her granddaughter while staying with her at Hardwick in the late 1700s.

Shining Cliff Woods

The ancient woodlands of Shining Cliff Woods near Cromford are a great place to see a carpet of bluebells. Located near Cromford, Shining Cliff is ancient woodland which was part of the royal hunting forest of Duffield Frith and is now designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). In addition, a circular trail for visitors passes by the remains of the Betty Kenny Tree, which is said to be 2000 years old.

Bluebell Wood Nature Reserve

Bluebell Wood Nature Reserve at Hayfield, High Peak has a fantastic array of wildlife, some easy to spot, others not so easy. What’s more, many of them are associated with ancient woodland.

The trees include oak, silver birch, hornbeam, field maple, beech and various willows. In addition, smaller understorey trees include hazel, holly and hawthorn.

Wildflowers include wood anemones, marsh marigolds, yellow archangels, and, of course, bluebells – visit in spring and you will see thousands of them.
