Peak District gets three top-10 spots in UK’s most tranquil locations. We’ve always known that Wheeldon Trees Cottages is set in one of the UK’s most beautiful locations. Now, a new poll has confirmed that the Peak District has some of the most tranquil locations for an English staycation.

Three areas of the Peak District have been named in the top 10 in a list of 50 most tranquil locations.

The poll judged on factors including the number of people posting about it on social media, the destination’s population, and the amount of hiking, bird watching, and fishing trails.

The small Peak District village of Over Haddon in Derbyshire came in third, Bakewell was fifth and Hathersage tenth.

All three locations are easy to get to from Wheeldon Trees and will make a lovely day away during your cottage holiday.

Over Haddon

Over Haddon is seven miles from Wheeldon Trees. The pretty village boasts chocolate box cottages and spectacular views over the surrounding hills and dales. Once you’ve walked around the village you can set off on more strenuous walks, heading through some excellent White Peak countryside. Paths lead steeply down to the delightful Lathkill Dale. Here, the remarkably clear water runs over a series of picturesque weirs down to the ancient bridge at Conksbury. Wooded slopes and craggy rocks line the dale sides where there are remnants of old lead mines and a nature reserve.

Bakewell

Bakewell is eight miles from Wheeldon Trees. Perhaps best known for its unique and delicious Pudding, Bakewell has many more tempting treats to offer. This ranges from shopping and specialist markets to relaxing strolls and special events.

The town is idyllically situated on the banks of the river Wye. It’s the biggest town in the Peak District National Park with mellow stone buildings, a medieval five-arched stone bridge and quaint courtyards.

Legend has it that the town’s famous Bakewell Pudding was created by mistake by a local cook in the mid-19th century. Today her delectable ‘jam tart that went wrong’ can be sampled at various bakeries and cafés throughout the town.

Hathersage

Hathersage is a 30-minute drive from Wheeldon Trees. With rich historical, industrial and literary associations, the picturesque village is brimming with character. What’s more, it has a great selection of shops, pubs and restaurants.

Hathersage is famous for local literary links and legends. It inspired author Charlotte Bronte when writing ‘Jane Eyre’. As well as Any Eyre, in and around the village are also sites associated with the legend of Robin Hood. In fact, his lieutenant, Little John is buried in the churchyard of St Michael’s.

Furthermore, Hathersage also has one of the UK’s few outdoor swimming pools. It first opened in the 1930s. The heated 100ft pool is open year-round. What’s more, it provides views of Stanage Edge, Hathersage Church and the surrounding hills.

Finally, the village is also home to the David Mellor Design Museum. In addition to the museum, there’s also an amazing café. The museum is dedicated to the renowned cutlery designer (who also designed the modern traffic light).
